How much "power" do I need?

Beware of any telescope advertised with high numbers like "400x" or described as "high power". Power or magnification is not the most important quality to judge a telescope by. A general rule is that the highest magnification that can be used without degrading the image is 20x per cm of aperture.

Even the best of amateur telescopes are most frequently used at less than 200x.
